Learning to Vote

May 5, 2017

I have been waiting a long time to vote in my life.  It is something I have always wanted to do, but I did not know how.  One day my best friend, Colleen, asked me if I ever voted.  I told her no.  She asked me if I wanted to vote.  I told her I would like to vote very much.

So I asked Mary, my tutor, about it.  Mary got me an application.  I filled it out and signed up.  I registered to vote in October 2008.  I voted the first time in November 2008 and that was four years ago when I was sixty-three years old.

After voting I wanted to learn more about the United States government.  I also got interested in our presidents.  I read about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln.  They were good presidents.  I learned about the American flag, too.

When it is time to vote I get ready to vote by reading the Easy Voter Guide from the library.  My tutor and I talk about the candidates and the propositions.  The Easy Voter Guide helps me understand so I can vote better.  It helps me make good choices.

It makes me feel good to be a voter.  I like being a voter because I can choose who I want to run the country.  Being able to vote means a lot to me.  It was the best thing that ever happened to me.  I feel proud to be a voter now.
