Old Hayward Memories
I remember when my mom worked at Grand Lanes Bowling Alley in old Hayward. I enjoyed working with her in the children’s day care play room. When I was old enough I joined the junior bowling league on Saturday morning. Learning to bowl was a lot of fun and I was good at it. The captain had the best bowlers compete with the coaches and I won a prize when I beat the coach. I went to several tournaments and we bowled all over the east bay. I won many pins and trophies in the tournaments. This is one of my happiest memories.
My mom remembered roller skating as a family at the rink on A Street by the rail road tracks. She told me about skating every Friday and Saturday in the evenings. We were four in our family then, I was about 3 years old. I don’t remember the skating, but I remember we had a favorite song from that time. My mom said we requested the same song every week and she would tell us about this happy memory whenever the song came on the radio. I still think about it when I hear Marvin Gaye.
I remember a few times we went to my grandma’s house in South Hayward. She had a beautiful garden with lots of flowers in the front yard. It was a quiet neighborhood then, much quieter than our neighborhood on Myrtle near downtown.
