ONE-ON-ONE ADULT TUTORING

Library literacy services are for English-speaking adults who want to improve their basic reading and writing skills. Remember, these services are FREE. If you are interested in becoming an adult learner, take the 3 steps below. If you know someone who would like to be a learner or would just like more information, find our brochure on the right.

Step 1 - CONTACT US
Please call our office at 510-881-7910 to find out if this is a good program for you.
Step 2 - SIT DOWN WITH US
You will be invited to come in for a conversation with a literacy staff member at the Hayward Main Library. You will get an overview of the program and find out what you can expect and what’s expected of you. We will get to know you better and will find out what you need help with.

-
You set the pace. There is no pressure, just a supportive environment for learning at your own speed.
-
We will supply you with books and materials but you are also welcome to bring books and materials from home or work to the tutoring session.
-
You and the volunteer tutor are a team. You can expect mutual respect and a positive experience.
-
If for any reason you do not feel comfortable with your tutor, just call your library literacy office and they will work with you to find another tutor.

Step 3 - LET THE LEARNING BEGIN!
We will call you, when we have a tutor for you. The tutor will receive your information and call you to schedule a time and a day for your first meeting. Typically, tutors and learners meet once or twice a week for one to two hours in a library setting.
