How Reading Changed My World
Reading is important. People often say that gold is valuable because it is wanted by everybody, but I say that reading is even more valuable because it is needed by everybody. Reading is changing me and my life. I remember when I came to the United States twelve years ago. I only brought my eyes with me. Although I had a mouth, I could not talk. I had ears but could not hear. I was like a frog that lived in a deep well. In my second year in this country, I had our first bab

Learning About Trains
I read a book about trains. I learned a lot about trains. Many people ride trains. They go to many places. They like to travel. You can see many things from the train. They have windows on the train. You can see trees as you go by the hills on the train. You can see animals. You can see beautiful flowers everywhere. You can see birds flying around in the sky. At night you can see bright lights. Resuming My Future Education
I had stopped attending the Hayward Library Literacy – Plus Learners Program for months because I had a major knee replacement surgery last May. My recovery has been a long process. I had a lot of therapy through the rehabilitation program of the hospital. I am still experiencing pain every now and then, however I’m dealing with the pain in a positive way. I wanted to resume my studies so I made contact with my tutor Alma to meet at the library. Alma is an excellent tutor

Reading is a Good Habit
Last weekend, I went to the Main Library to meet with my English tutor. When I got there, I remembered my childhood when I was 7 years old. I used to go to the library in my hometown. Every day after school I enjoyed doing my homework and reading many different kinds of books. One day, the library had a reading competition. I won the first place. The prize was a book. I was very happy, because now I had my first own book. I remember the title was ‘The Pied Piper of Hamelin.’

My Big Secret
Hi my name is Jerome. This is my story of living with a secret. The secret is not knowing how to read and write. When I was a young boy in elementary school I was teased a lot. We all went to regular class. I had to go to a special class, too, but I did not want anybody to see me. I snuck in the classroom. All my school years I was hiding my secret. I would come in late. I would not want my sports mates to know my secret. I graduated from high school still keeping my secret.
